Alex the African Grey Parrot

When animal psychologist Irene Pepperberg entered a Northwest Side pet shop in 1977 and purchased an obnoxious one-year-old african grey parrots on sale grey parrot named Alex She began a 30-year experiment that changed the way we view the avian brain. Her thirty-year study of him revolutionized the theories of animal cognition and communication. She credits Alex with teaching her how to apply the model that worked for animals as well as children with learning disabilities.

After her research with him, Dr. Pepperberg went on to conduct studies with other parrots like Wart and Griffin. She is currently a professor at the University of Washington, Alex the African Grey Parrot where she continues her pioneering work with birds.

What was Alex like in terms of intelligence?

He was also able to communicate with other animals through signs and was able to comprehend a lot of grammar. He employed a method of training known as "rival model" which involved two trainers showing the bird what they wanted to teach it. The trainers would change places frequently so that the bird could be able to interact with both of them and receive praise and attention from each of them.

Alex was named as a National Hero in 2014 by President Barack Obama after the success of Free Solo. He was able to accomplish many things in his lifetime due to his strength of character and the desire to live life on his own terms.
